سائنس دان ایک نئے وائی فائی سسٹم پر کام کر رہے ہیں جو ڈیٹا ترسیل کی رفتار میں غیر معمولی اضافہ کرتا ہے ۔ میگا میمو 2.0 کہلانے والا یہ نیا سسٹم موجودہ وائی فائی سے تین گنا زیادہ رفتار سے وائرلیس ڈیٹا ٹرانسفر کر سکتا ہے اور اس کی رینج بھی دوگنی ہے۔ امریکا کے میساچوسٹس انسٹی ٹیوٹ آف ٹیکنالوجی کی کمپیوٹر سائنس اینڈ آرٹیفیشل انٹیلی جینس لیب (CSAIL) کی ٹیم کا تیار کردہ میگامیمو کسی روز ان وائی فائی راؤٹرز میں بھی آ جائے گا جنہیں آج ہم اپنے گھروں پر استعمال کرتے ہیں ۔ بلکہ اگر سسکو اور نیٹ گیئر جیسے بڑے ادارے اس سسٹم کو اپنی مصنوعات میں شامل کرنے پر رضامند ہوگئے تو بہت جلد ایسا ہوگا ۔ اس نئی ٹیکنالوجی کا سب سے بڑا فائدہ ان مقامات پر ہوگا جہاں بہت زیادہ رش ہو جیسا کہ کھیلوں کے ایونٹس ، اجتماعی مراکز یا ایئرپورٹس پر کہ جہاں سینکڑوں بلکہ ہزاروں افراد اسی انٹرنیٹ سگنل سے منسلک ہونے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں ۔ ان عوامی مقامات پر آپ نے خود بھی دیکھا ہوگا کہ انٹرنیٹ کی رفتار خاصی کم ہوجاتی ہے اور کبھی کبھار تو وہ کام ہی نہیں کرتا ۔ اس کا واحد حل یہی نظر آتا ہے کہ زیادہ وائرلیس راؤٹرز لگائے جائیں جس سے انٹرنیٹ کی فراہمی پر آنے والی لاگت کہیں بڑھ جاتی ہے ۔ میگامیمو اسی سے چھٹکارا حاصل کرنے کے لیے تیار کیا گیا ہے ۔ اس نئے سسٹم کے ٹیسٹ کے دوران معلوم ہوا کہ میگامیمو 2.0 عام وائی فائی کے مقابلے میں 330 فیصد زیادہ رفتار کے ساتھ ڈیٹا کی ترسیل کر رہا تھا ۔ اب سائنس دان اس ٹیکنالوجی کو کمرشلائز کرنے پر کام کر رہے ہیں اور ان کا کہنا ہے کہ صنعت کے چند بڑے ناموں کے ساتھ مذاکرات جاری ہیں ۔

گوگل کی کمپنی ’’الفابیٹ‘‘ نے منافع کمانے میں ’’ایپل‘‘ کو پیچھے چھوڑ دیا
رپورٹ کے مطابق الفابیٹ کمپنی نے رواں مالی سال کی چوتھی سہ ماہی میں 4.9 ارب ڈالر کمائے اور یوں ان کے سالانہ نفع میں 4.7 ارب ڈالر کا اضافہ ہوا ہے جس سے الفابیٹ کے شیئر کی قمیت میں 9 فیصد اضافہ ہوگیا۔ اس اضافے کے بعد اب الفابیٹ کمپنی کی قیمت 568 ارب ڈالر ہوگئی ہے جو پاکستانی روپوں میں 568 کھرب روپے بنتی ہے جب کہ ایپل کی کل قمیت 535 ارب ڈالرہے۔ رپورٹ کے مطابق یہ پہلا موقع ہے کہ الفابیٹ کا سالانہ نفع 16.3 ارب ڈالر سے بڑھا ہے جب کہ اسی کمپنی کی ایک اور شاخ ادر بیٹس کو اسی سہ ماہی کے دوران 3.6 ارب ڈالر کا نقصان ہوا، گوگل کا آپریٹنگ انکم بڑھ کر 23.4 ارب ڈالر تک پہنچ گئی ہے اوراس کی نفع میں اضافہ کی بڑی وجہ آن لائن اشتہارروں میں اضافہ ہے۔ الفابیٹ کے شیئر کی قیمت اس وقت 770 ڈالر ہے جب کہ اس کی اسٹاک مارکیٹ میں قیمت 517 ارب ڈالر تک پہنچ گئی ہے۔
مزوہو سیکورٹیز کے مینجنگ ڈائریکٹر کا کہنا ہے کہ اس سے ثابت ہورہا ہے کہ گوگل مسلسل موبائل اشتہارات میں لیڈ کر رہا ہے جب کہ تجزیہ کاروں کے مطابق ایپل نے گزشتہ سال اپنے فیچرز میں کوئی بڑا انوکھا آئیڈیا نہیں دیا جب کہ اس کے مقابلے میں الفابیٹ نے کئی نئے آئیڈیا دیئے ہیں جس کا اسے انعام نفع کی صورت میں ملا۔ گوگل پر سال بھر ڈرایورلیس کار، انٹرنیٹ رکھنے والے غباروں اور گوگل گلاس کے لاؤنچ کرنے سے متعلق کافی دباؤرہا تاہم پھر بھی گوگل نے میدان مارلیا۔

Microsoft pledges ‘cloud computing for public good'
The resources will be shared out over the next three years to about 70,000 non-profits and 900 university research projects.
In simplest terms, cloud computing is the term given to storing data on the internet, rather than on a local computer.
As well as making data more easily accessible, the added promise for non-profits is that the resources will provide vast amounts of computing power that would ordinarily be out of reach for all but the biggest businesses.
In a blog post explaining the initiative, Microsoft's chief legal officer Brad Smith wrote: "Cloud services can unlock the secrets held by data in ways that create new insights and lead to breakthroughs, not just for science and technology, but for addressing the full range of economic and social challenges and the delivery of better human services."
The crunching of so-called "big data" is seen as a major opportunity for non-profits dealing in social issues that pose a cumbersome problem without the kind of processing power cloud computing can provide.
In that respect, Microsoft's pledge isn't for a tangible product, or cash, but instead access to servers and services that normal businesses would need to pay considerable fees for.
The money will also be spent on improving "last mile" internet connectivity - the hope is countries that are under connected will begin to enjoy some of the luxuries more developed internet nations have - such as broadband at home.
Tough crowd
Other companies, particularly Facebook, have pursued similar goals.
Facebook's Internet.org project is investing in connectivity technologies - such as drones - to fill that last mile, helping what founder Mark Zuckerberg refers to as the "next billion" people to access the web.
However, initiatives such as this aren't always so well received. Facebook's Free Basics scheme, in which certain mobile sites were accessible for free, has caused uproar in India, where local businesses say Facebook is giving itself an unfair advantage over local competitors.
Microsoft will invariably be hit with the same accusation - that a donation over three years will be made in the hope that organisations will become ingrained in the Microsoft cloud ecosystem for many more years to come.
That said, Microsoft boss Satya Nadella has gained considerable applause for his continually expressed desire to use Microsoft's immense size and wealth in developing countries, including his native India.
As well as being a guest of Michelle Obama at the recent State of the Union address, the 48-year-old is attending the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, seeking to stress Microsoft's potential to provide computing power for initiatives beyond big business.
In a blog post published on Wednesday, he wrote: "If cloud computing is one of the most important transformations of our time, how do we ensure that its benefits are universally accessible?
"What if only wealthy societies have access to the data, intelligence, analytics and insights that come from the power of mobile and cloud computing?"

Vodafone launches gigabit fibre broadband products in Ireland
Roll-out of Ireland’s Siro network advances with the launch of a 1Gbps domestic service backed by Vodafone
The 15,000 residents of Carrigaline in County Cork will be the first to receive access to Vodafone’s first 1Gbps consumer broadband service in Ireland, which has just been launched.
The service forms part of the Siro joint venture between Vodafone and the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) – the Irish state electricity supplier – to provide fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) connections using ESB’s overground and underground infrastructure to replace the copper last mile.
Siro, which is backed to the tune of €450m (£317m), aims to pass small towns of more than 4,000 properties and will expand across Ireland by 2018, touching 500,000 homes and businesses. It is the first project in Europe to use electricity infrastructure to bring ultrafast broadband closer to the consumer.
Carrigaline, a commuter town near Cork, will be the first of 51 towns to get Siro, offering speeds of up to 1Gbps, many times faster than the current Irish average of around 30Mbps.
“The successful economies of the future will be gigabit societies with ultrafast fibre-optic connections available everywhere,” said Vodafone Group public policy director Markus Reinisch.
“Vodafone is playing its part in realising that objective: We have demonstrated that we invest in FTTP when conditions allow us to do so, working together with other forward-looking companies to build the ultrafast digital infrastructure that Europe needs.”
At the same time, Vodafone announced a major expansion of its FTTP network in Portugal, adding 2.75 million homes to the roll-out by the end of 2016 at a cost of €125m. It has already passed 2.2 million premises in the country, and is also planning similar network builds in Spain and Italy – the Italian network in collaboration with electricity supplier Enel.
In the UK, the mobile operator re-entered the consumer broadband market earlier in 2015, backed by network assets that it acquired from Cable & Wireless.
However, Vodafone Connect, which is available to 22 million properties, is not a full FTTP service and only provides a top-end superfast service of 76Mbps, a far cry from what it is making available overseas.

1. Understand the cyber risk
“New technologies bring new opportunities, but they also introduce new risks,” said Neal Watkins, chief product officer at BAE Systems.“As companies acquire and integrate other companies and technologies, we need to look at the new risks that brings,” he said .
This includes looking for potential risks introduced by third parties, contractors and changes in the supply chain.
Top of any company’s cyber security checklist should be ensuring that the cyber security strategy is taking all changes in the operating environment into account.
“It is important to have a living, breathing cyber security strategy that you review and update on an ongoing basis to capture all of these new risks,” said Watkins.
2. Have the right security controls
Once vulnerabilities have been identified, BAE Systems said businesses need to be prepared to make big decisions if vulnerabilities are critical.CW+

3. Balance business and risk
At the absolute minimum, business directors need to understand what the most critical assets are and key areas of vulnerability.“Businesses need to make the right decision that balances security risk against commercial necessity and does the right thing by the business and customers in the long term,” said Watkins.
Leaders should discuss what cyber risk they are prepared to take, and how much they want to invest to manage it.
“There needs to be the courage in making the difficult decisions on what systems and services are protected, and at what level,” said Watkins.
4. Build a defensive culture with security-by-design
Security needs to be ingrained into the company culture, according to BAE Systems. Security by design, said Watkins, involves everybody making sure they are working securely, whatever role in the company they have.“It’s about everyone ensuring the tasks they complete are secure in terms of process and execution, whether they are writing code in an application, delivering a service or responding to a customer or handling their data,” he said.
According to BAE Systems, security analytics, threat intelligence and situational awareness can help in discovering where the vulnerabilities are.
5. Prepare a response
Finally, the security firm noted that no security is completely effective, and there is always a chance of a successful attack.For this reason, having a plan in place to respond and repair is what makes the difference between a full-blown crisis and a problem that can be tackled.
“In the event of an attack or crisis, people will be measured in terms of how they respond, and making sure you have a well-thought-through, rehearsed and tested response plan is going to be critical,” he said.
The way people respond to a cyber attack or incident, according to BAE Systems, will have a major effect on operational impact and loss of productivity, as well as customer confidence.
